Religious ceremonies marking the transition from childhood to young adult are as old as history, designed to help youth learn about themselves and prepare for adulthood. As Unitarian Universalists, we mark this transition with a year-long Coming of Age program which includes four parts: pairing youth with adult mentors; discussions and retreats that emphasize self-awareness and confidence-building; service to the church and community; and a culminating affirmation ceremony. This Sunday we celebrate our youth as they share their statements of faith with us, marking their completion of the Coming of Age program.Sherri Woody with Rev Patty Hanneman assisting.
May 29 – The Courage to Be Vulnerable
The latest research by Dr. Brene’ Brown shows that courage is born out of vulnerability, not strength. This finding not only shook the perfectionist ground beneath her own feet, but has helped to inspire millions to reconsider how we live, parent, and navigate our relationships.Rev. Patty Hanneman will reflect on lessons learned from Brown’s work.
